Note to Roberto Benigni –
Why is it that films from Bollywood, the film industry of India, are mostly plagiarized from other films from around the world? In the year 2015, the tendency of Bollywood to plagiarize reached new heights of disgracefulness as the director, Shoojit Sircar, decided to stun audiences around the world with a plagiarized version of Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina titled, ‘Piku’. The film featured the likes of Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bacchan and Irfan Khan. How is it acceptable that Jean-Luc Godard, probably the greatest director of all time, and Anna Karina, the actor who has fascinated cinephiles for decades, are faced with their greatest works being plagiarized? If this was not a great enough atrocity, we then had a plagiarized version of ‘When Harry Met Sally’ titled ‘When Harry Met Sejal’ featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Anoushka Sharma. The latest in the series of plagiarized films is a copy of the Johnny Depp starrer, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ titled ‘Thugs of Hindostan’. The actors in the film include Amir Khan, Amitabh Bacchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh. How can plagiarism on such a massive scale be allowed in Bollywood? There are international regulations in such matters. If every other country in the world can abide by these regulations, why does India see itself as an exception? Why is India allowed to get away with violations in every single aspect of life? Bollywood is subject to the same laws that every other film industry in the world is subject to. Why does Bollywood not follow the law? How is the plagiarism of Jean-Luc Godard, Anna Karina and Johnny Depp acceptable? Should these miscreants, these criminals in the eyes if the law, not be stopped? How can plagiarism reach such astounding proportions? This is a violation of every single ethical standard in cinema. When will these film criminals be stopped?
